From prototype to production: a PCB DFM checklist

A board that works on the bench is not yet a board that can be built ten thousand times. A short checklist before release.

Design for manufacture is about yield, test time and supply — the things that decide unit cost once volumes grow.

Fabrication

  • Confirm track/space, drill and annular-ring limits with the chosen fabricator before layout is final.
  • Specify stack-up and impedance targets on the fab drawing.
  • Add panelisation, fiducials and tooling holes agreed with the assembler.

Assembly

  • Keep part orientation consistent and leave courtyard clearance for rework.
  • Avoid mixing large thermal masses next to fine-pitch parts on the same reflow side.
  • Prefer single-sided SMT where possible to remove a reflow pass.

Test

Bring every power rail, programming interface and key signal to accessible test points. Plan the programming and functional test fixture alongside the layout, not after it.

Supply chain

Check lifecycle status and stock for every part, approve alternates for passives and common ICs, and lock the BOM revision to the PCB revision so the factory always builds what was validated.

Rust vs C/C++ for constrained embedded systems: the practical trade-offs

Rust promises memory safety without a garbage collector. On a microcontroller with 64 KB of RAM, does that beat decades of C and C++? A practical comparison for firmware teams.

Design for EMC from the first schematic

Most EMC failures are decided long before the test lab. A few habits at schematic and layout stage save weeks of re-spins.
